THE FIVE LAMPS [A POPULAR LANDMARK IN DUBLIN]

The Five Lamps, a popular landmark, is a decorative lamp post with five lanterns, which stands at the junction of five streets - Portland Row, North Strand Road, Seville Place, Amiens Street and Killarney Street.

Locals believe that the name “five lamps” comes from the five streets which meet at this point [one lamp for each street] while many historians insist that they commemorate five major battles fought in India during the days of the British Empire. In fact the structure was installed around 1880 as a memorial to General Henry Hall from Galway who had served with the British Army in India.
