Contemporary Banana by Kevin Pierce won the  New Ireland Assurance Sculpture Award last year.

Sculpture in Context is the largest and most prestigious outdoor sculpture exhibition in Ireland, showcasing the work of Irish and international artists. Over the years it has staged highly acclaimed visual arts events at a number of different venues. It returns to the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin this September. I have not yet been advised as to the dates for the 2017 exhibition.

SYNTHESIS BY MICHELLE MAHER [SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT 2016]

Michelle's work in clay is informed and inspired by plant and botanical forms, in particular that part of our environment that is hidden from view or perhaps ignored.

She seeks to illuminate this world in her ceramic sculptures and to take a snapshot of a moment in a plants life and make it accessible to all.  In exploring these concepts - clay with its amazing vigour, vitality and fluidity gives her the freedom to create wonderful textures, colours and forms.  Michelle is especially inspired when working on large site-specific outdoor projects and she often designs her sculptures for installation in water.  She has been involved in a number of large-scale Public Art projects in recent years.

GRATTAN HILL AND OTHER AREAS [MONTENOTTY & ST. LUKE’S AREA OF CORK]

On one of my days in Cork it rained so much that at times it was almost impossible to take any photographs. I decided to visit St. Luke’s Wine Tavern and stayed until about 10pm but by the time that I had returned to my hotel room there was a slight break in the weather so I decided to put on my rain gear and wander around the Montenotty area and photograph anything that might be of interest. For various reasons I decide to use my 15mm Voightlander but unfortunately while fitting I managed to introduce some very large dust particles that proved impossible to remove until I returned to Dublin.

Because it was dark and as it was raining and because of the dust problem my photographs turned out to suffer noise and this impacted on the quality of the images.

Montenotte is an area in the north-east of Cork City, Ireland, which had an influx of wealthier merchants and a prosperous middle classes in the early to mid-19th century. Situated on a hill facing south over the River Lee, Montenotte acquired numerous substantial residences, some of them set in miniature estates graced with fine terraced gardens. Its favourable outlook was downgraded by the development of large-scale industry in the Marina area across the river in the early 20th century. Many of the larger houses now have institutional uses, or have been divided into apartments.

Some people would describe the area as ‘run down” or past its best but I must admit that I like the area. Saint Luke is considered the patron saint of painters which is somewhat appropriate as there is an artistic or boho feel to the area.

Wellington Terrace is a short cul de sac dog-leg row at the start of straggling, sandstone ridge-clinging Grattan Hill, beloved of Thackery who wrote lovingly two centuries ago about the vista, aspect, river views and genteel shabbiness and local gayety. All of which it still enjoys, by the way.

CHRIST THE KING CATHOLIC CHURCH [CABRA DUBLIN]

I never walked along Cabra Road until today.

Cabra (Irish: An Chabrach, meaning "the poor land") is a suburb on the Northside of Dublin. It is approximately 2 kilometres northwest of the city centre, in the administrative area of Dublin City Council. It was commonly known as Cabragh until the early 20th century. Cabra is also a parish in the Fingal South West deanery of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin. It is served by the Church of Christ the King.

PREVIEW OF THE SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT EXHIBITION [DETAILS AND ARTIST IDENTITY NOT YET AVAILABLE] REF-120470

Sculpture In Context 2016 at the National Botanic Gardens,Glasnevin, Dublin 9. 8th September to 21st October 2016

One of the events that I really look forward to every year is the Sculpture In Context exhibition in the Botanic Gardens and this year is no exception. Today I cheated to some extent because I visited a few days before the event opens to the public. The downside is that the catalogue was not available so I cannot identify the artwork or the artists at this stage but I will do so later in the month.

Last year I switched from the Sony NEX-7 to the new Sony Full Frame A7RM2 and while it was delivered in time for me to photograph the exhibition the full frame lenses that I needed did not arrive until Christmas week.

This year I do have a selection of lenses one of which is the Batis 25mm which I used today. I am in the process of upgrading to the Sony family of lenses but the 70-200 which was ordered about three months ago may not arrive until the end of the month.
