FULL TURN BY MARK RYAN [SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT 2017]

 I used a manual lens today and focus was a bit off in some cases because of my lack of experience with the lens in question [to be honest I was adjusting the wrong dial]. Mark Ryan is a sculptor who works in a variety of materials – wood, clay, plaster, steel, stainless steel and bronze.

It was not easy to photograph this as there was a lot of vegetation blocking a clear view. Artist Jo-ann Hatty operates from a gallery in Bangor, Northern Ireland. My understanding is that she has designed some of Northern Ireland’s most popular sculptures at Laganside, Belfast, and the Causeway Hospital, Coleraine.

Cliodna Cussen was born and educated in Co. Limerick. She attended third level education in Dublin and Florence and is presently based in Dublin and Kerry. She works as a full-time sculptor using mostly bronze and stone. Cliodna does graphic work in the Graphic Studio Dublin and she also illustrates and publishes Irish Children's Stories. She has exhibited widely and won a number of awards for her work, including the Listowel Gold Medal for sculpture and the sculpture prize at the Oireachtas.

This was by far the one that I liked best. “I create tyre sculptures by first building a steel armature that forms the sculpture’s ‘skeleton.’ Then I attach tyres to the armature. For larger sculptures, I occasionally also work with used car tyres.”

This was difficult to photograph and my photographs fail to show the fine details. I will try again with a different lens. Emer O’Donnell was born in Dublin Ireland. She is currently completing a BA in Fine Art (Hons) Ceramics and Glass in the National College of Art and Design.

Emer uses the technique of graal to explore the properties of glass attempting to draw the eye beyond the surface … it is possible that this is what made it difficult for me to photograph her work.

Gunvor Anhøj was born in Denmark in 1973. She currently lives and works at Russborough House, County Wicklow, Ireland. From early childhood she loved making and used to sit and carve wooden objects in the garden of the family home. For a living she trained as a horticulturalist and was first introduced to Iron when required to plough the fields the old way using horses and a one-furrow plough. Following her intrigue with both the material and the tradition of the blacksmith she then trained in Hereford, England achieving a Higher National Diploma in Three Dimensional Design Crafts, Blacksmithing at the Hereford College of Art and Design.

Sculpture In Context is my favourite event of the year. Unfortunately it is very obvious that fewer artists have been involved this year compared to previous years … I overheard someone saying that there were ten fewer artists compared to 2016.

 Jackie is a sculptor living and working in Dun Laoghaire. She received her degree in Visual Communications from DIT and subsequently ran her own Design Consultancy for twelve years before pursuing a career in ceramics and sculptural work. In 2010, she won a Sculpture in Context Award for ‘Clip Art’.

NOTE: Since taking these photographs I have abandoned the idea of using the Metabones adaptor and I have invested a lot of cash in native lenses.

Anne McGill is an Irish sculptor working from her studio in Dublin. Anne´s sculpture has evolved over the last two decades from semi-abstract figurative bronze sculptures to large outdoor ephemeral sculptures and more recently ´found objects´ installations.

Anne has used the theme of music in a lot of her artwork and has made various musically themed sculptures for site specific commissions.

She is presently working on outdoor installations and large garden sculptures using various materials. She has created ceramic sculptures, wooden sculptures, stone sculptures, metal sculptures and lately willow and hessian sculptures.

I experimented with a Sigma 180mm lens mounted on a Sony A7RM2 body using a Metabones adaptor.

This combination does not work in Auto-Focus mode so I had to use manual focusing and this was not easy and it certainly would have been impossible without focus peaking [a feature that I have never properly employed before]. In case you are unaware focus peaking is a tool to assist you while manual focusing. It highlights the areas that are in focus so you are able to quickly focus the camera and not miss crucial shots. However, focus peaking is not as easy as it sounds because it shows you what's sharp on the viewfinder screen, not what's sharp in the actual image. Since the screen or viewfinder has a much lower resolution than the actual camera sensor areas that are highlighted as being sharp in the viewfinder can be very much out of focus in the image you actually capture.

The Dragonfly on the pond was difficult to photograph as it kept moving.

YELLOW MAN BY ANNE McGILL SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT AT THE BOTANIC GARDENS IN DUBLIN

As a matter of interest: Yellowman is a chewy toffee-textured honeycomb produced in Northern Ireland.Ingredients of Yellowman are commonly quoted as including brown sugar, golden syrup, butter, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda but there are many local variations in ingredients and recipes.

This is one of three art installations by Anne included in this year’s exhibition in the Botanic Gardens.

Rob Byrne is a primarily self taught Dublin artist. Having made the transition from wood and metal, he has found his home in the medium of stone. Inspired by the natural world, Rob aims to convey natures compelled adaptation to human encroachment into it’s habitat. Rob’s work has been shown in exhibitions such as Form, Sculpture in Context and in the Kildare Gallery at Carton House, Vanishing Art, as well as private collections.
